Question by LOUIS C: what is the towing capacity of a 1998 windstar?
I have not got a towing package. The engine is a 3.8. What do I need to pull a travel trailer, or can I pull anything?

Depends on the size of the travel trailer you wish to tow and where you’ll do most of your towing. You could use the Windstar to tow many of the smaller lightweight trailers like the Chalet, Teardrop, or an A-Liner, possibly even some of the fiberglass “eggs” and 8′ box popups. Anything larger would burn out your transmission.

I should know – we had a Dodge Grand Caravan with the same size engine to tow our 10′ box popup and even though we had a transmission cooler installed, we burned up 2 transmissions before buying a full-size van to tow our trailer.

But, we live in east Tennessee where there are lots of hills. If you live somewhere along a coastal plain or in the Midwest where it’s relatively flat, you could tow up to a lightweight 17′ TT. But I sure wouldn’t try towing it up into the mountains!

  • Rick B:

I do not suggest towing anything with a windstar, 1998 was a bad year for transmissions for the windstar. Search “windstar transmissions” on the web for more info.
