Do these people actually give you a little money and then tow your car away? How does it work?

Most times, it is exactly what you described. Most cars are not worth more than the scrap metal they eventually become. If you do have a car you want to scrap, call one or more of these places. They will probably give you one price quote if you bring in the car yourself, and a lesser price if you expect them to tow it in for you. This is only fair, and it does get junked cars off of the street.
Regarding the “top dollar” statement. Some cars, even if not running, are worth more because the used parts that can be salvaged are in higher demand. “Top dollar” is a relative term, so calling around may give you a better idea of what the vehicle is worth.
Remember, if you sell the parts, one at a time, it takes up your time and labor. Don’t expect to get the same value from a junk dealer who has to pay someone else to pull parts for him. If you just want to get rid of the car, don’t expect, or hold out for much money. If I get $ 15 or $ 30 for a piece of junk staining my concrete driveway, I come out ahead, especially if the alternate is for me to pay a towing company to haul it to a junkyard.
