I'm going to agree with everyone who said that going to a junk yard would be ok. You could also go to a body shop, and get before and after shoots which would be a story in and of itself. I work in the media and I'm shooting accidents all the time. You CAN get actual crash scene photos if you're willing to invest a little time. If you have or know someone who has a police scanner you could listen for one to happen and go to the scene. These are kind of like buses, there's one about every 15 minutes. The property damage only wrecks clear pretty quickly but injury accidents take a little while to investigate so they aren't hard to catch before they are cleared up. Some cites have real time accident info online. This in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Departments listing in Charlotte NC.

The accident comes off the screen when the officer clears the call so usually the scene has cleared long before that happens. As long as you are on public property and don't get in the way, you shouldn't have any problems doing this. Here's a few of mine over the years.

Good luck with you project and hope this was of some help.

If you are dressed appropriately for crawling around through high weeds, broken glass and mud....they probably won't care. I have also taken photos of cars there.....they didn't bother to ask me why....just pointed to the back and said "Knock yer self out".

Because your assignment has to do with "telling a story," and you've chosen wrecked cars, Mowhitetails' suggestion you contact your local police department is a good one. That's whom I'd approach.

Also, if there's a police and firefighter training academy in your county, you may wish to contact them, as they deal with processing accidents and extricating occupants of wrecked vehicles.

I would say not a junkyard. Junkyards just pile cars up, so the damage you see might not be from an accident.

Where you want to go is a 'tow yard'. Call up a local towing company (or just go down). Cars that have been towed away from an accident are stored separately, like in a parking lot. They have different amounts of damage, and usually the damage is from the accident, not from handling. Often they handle them carefully because there might be forensic investigation, like finding paint from one car on another to prove who ran into whom. They're not just stacked up in piles like in a junkyard, and also it's safer to walk around for that reason.

Junk Yards. There is usually one in almost every town. People go and pick parts of the cars but they are all totalled in some way.
