I’m trying to mail a letter (in a simple rectangular envelope) from my town north of Boston (01845) to Van Nuys, CA (91499). How many stamps do I need to put on it (or what overall value in stamps) for it to be sent?

You just need one stamp that’s 44 cents. Or just get one of those forever stamps. As long as it’s not too thick, one stamp will do. If it has more than 3 sheets of regular paper, then add a second stamp.
For letters sent through the US Postal Service, you can send the letter anywhere in the US for the same price.
